LG G3 reportedly spotted in images showing off rear buttons

lg_g3_leaked_back_gsmarena.jpg
The successor to the LG G2 flagship, the LG G3, has been spotted in a leaked image. Unfortunately, the leaked image is of low-resolution and has been shot with a dark background. However, the leaked image shows the alleged rear panel of the handset with physical buttons accompanying the primary camera.
GSMArena claims to have obtained a live image of the alleged LG G3, which shows back-mounted buttons for power and volume controls, first seen in LG G2. The leaked image does indicate that the rumoured G3 will feature a new design, different from the current LG G-series smartphones.
Recently, purported LG G3 screenshots flaunted a new 'flat' UI on the QHD display of the handset. The screenshots leaked showed a flat, card-style design of the yet-to-arrive LG G3. The notification panel was also seen with a brand new look, in-line with the rest of the interface, and looked bit cluttered due to its QSlide app tray. Nevertheless, the overall design of the user interface, said to be running over Android KitKat OS, seems clean and appealing.
The LG G3, now confirmed to arrive in Q2 2014, is said to resemble the recently seen 'LG isai FL' smartphone's design that was leaked in an image. Notably, LG recently confirmed the inclusion of a Quad-HD (1440x2560 resolution) pixels display in the LG G2's successor.
The recently leaked Sprint user agent profile and the AnTuTu benchmark test results also corroborated the LG G3 will sport Quad-HD resolution. The Sprint user agent profile additionally shows the handset to run on Android 4.4.2 KitKat along with a 13-megapixel rear camera, a 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera, 3GB of RAM, and 32GB built-in storage that can be expanded up to 64GB. The AnTuTu benchmark points out some more specifications such as Adreno 330 GPU, OpenGL ES 3.0, a rather inaccurate 640 dpi, and multi-touch support.

Samsung Galaxy S5 grabs 1 percent share of Android market in a week: Study

samsung_galaxy_s5_chart_apple_iphone_5s_comapred_localytics1.jpg
A week after the launch of the much-hyped Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone, a study indicates the device has grabbed nearly 1 percent of the global Android smartphone market.
According to a report by Localytics , an analytics and marketing platform, the Galaxy S5 device has covered an impressive 0.7 percent of all active Android smartphones worldwide. To put this in perspective, Localytics says the iPhone 5s achieved a 1.1 percent share of all iPhone models a week after its launch last year.
On comparing the graph of both the handsets' OS-based market share post launch, the SamsungGalaxy S5 seems to have fared worse, until you take into account the size of the vast Android ecosystem.
The report also indicates the Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone is quite popular with Americans. While the US currently holds a 64 percent global share of the device, Europe and other regions hold 23 and 13 percent shares respectively. The Galaxy S5's predecessor, the Galaxy S4, was also very popular in the US, with 51 percent of Galaxy S4 smartphones currently in the market found in the US, 28 percent in Europe, and 21 percent in the remaining countries.
samsung_galaxy_s5_chart_apple_iphone_5s_comapred_localytics2.jpg
The vast difference between the Galaxy S5's US and European market share is said to be caused by the lack of availability of the handset in some European countries, though it should become more widely-available over time.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 smartphone was launched during the Mobile World Congress 2014 event on February 25 and went on worldwide sale on April 11. Some of the key specifications of the handset are Android 4.4.2 KitKat, 5.1-inch Super AMOLED display with a 1080x1920 pixel full-HD resolution, 2.5GHz quad-core processor coupled with 2GB of RAM, and 16-megapixel rear and 2.1-megapixel front-facing camera.

Users most likely to unfriend high school friends on Facebook: Survey

facebook-blue-wall-635.jpg
The most likely type of person to be unfriended on Facebook is a high school friend, a new study has found.
Scientists have found new insight into the most common kind of 'friend' who is unfriended on Facebook, as well as the unfriended person's emotional response to such a situation.
Researchers from the University of Colorado, Denver, found that the top five kinds of people respondents unfriended were: high school friends, other, friend of a friend, work friends and common interest friend.
"The most common reason for unfriending someone from high school is that the person posted polarising comments often about religion or politics," said Christopher Sibona, a doctoral student in the Computer Science and Information Systems programme at the CU Denver Business School.
"The other big reason for unfriending was frequent, uninteresting posts," said Sibona.
Sibona's first study examined 'context collapse and unfriending behaviours' on Facebook and his second looked at 'the emotional response to being unfriended.'
Both studies were based on a survey of 1,077 people conducted on Twitter.
"We found that people often unfriend co-workers for their actions in the real world rather than anything they post on Facebook," Sibona said.
One reason he believes high school friends are top targets for unfriending is that their political and religious beliefs may not have been as strong when they were younger.
And if those beliefs have grown more strident over time, it becomes easier to offend others.
"Your high school friends may not know your current political or religious beliefs and you may be quite vocal about them," Sibona said.
"And one thing about social media is that online disagreements escalate much more quickly," Sibona said.
The second study looked at the emotional impact of being unfriended.
Sibona found a range of emotions connected to unfriending, from being bothered to being amused. The most common responses to being unfriended were: 'I was surprised', 'It bothered me', 'I was amused' and 'I felt sad'.
"The strongest predictor is how close you were at the peak of your friendship when the unfriending happened," said Sibona.

Truecaller partners with Tata Docomo to offer service with no data charges

truecaller_iphone.jpg

Under the partnership, Tata Docomo customers will be able to access Truecaller service without having to pay mobile Internet charges.
The application accesses phone book of users with their permission to include their contact in its data base.
Whenever Truecaller user receives an incoming call, it shows the name of caller on the phone screen even if it is not saved in the mobile phone by checking it immediately from its database.
"India is important for Truecaller at present. Out of 55 million subscribers, about 30 million are in India. These stats talk about importance of our partnership with Tata Docomo," Truecaller's Vice President for Growth and Partnership, Asia, Kari Krishnamurthy told PTI.
"We only need access to contact list of users. However, an user can also unlist its number from our website if he or she doesn't want his or her mobile number to be searched by anonymous person," Krishnamurthy said.
Under the agreement, Tata Docomo customers will also get access to premium features of Truecaller free for 90 days.
These features include advertisement free experience, users will be able to see who's viewed their profile and even they can even see how many minutes ago someone saw it.
"Besides this users will get 30 contact requests at the start of every month. With these requests users can contact other Truecaller users by looking for their name in the directory... which is they can search phone number by typing name," Krishnamurthy said.
He said that Truecaller is adding 6 lakh users a week in India and with this partnership Truecaller expects to increase growth rate.

Galaxy S5 price has not been slashed in India, clarifies Samsung

2252014124325AM_635_samsung_galaxy_s5.jpeg
Samsung has moved to dismiss reports that it has officially dropped the price of its Galaxy S5 smartphone in India to compete with the HTC One (M8).
HTC announced on Monday that the One (M8) will be priced at Rs. 49,900 in India. At least one online retailer was then spotted selling the Samsung Galaxy S5 at a sub-Rs. 47,000 price point, leading to a flurry of media reports claiming that Samsung had slashed the Galaxy S5 price to counter the HTC One (M8) launch. However, Samsung has now dismissed these reports.
The company issued an email statement on Thursday saying "reports claiming Samsung Electronics has revised prices of Galaxy S5 are false and baseless" and the Galaxy S5 "continues to be priced at Rs. 51,500."
It's worth pointing out that companies in India only set a maximum retail price as mandated by the law, and dealers - including online outlets - are free to sell below that price, at a cost to their own margins. It's clear that some media outlets mistook what was standard price-cutting by third-party retailers to be an official price drop and ran with the story.
Samsung continues to sell the Galaxy S5 for Rs. 51,500 via its online store and added in the statement that "this pricing is based on robust demand and increasing sales."
Here is Samsung's statement in full:
Samsung Electronics, India's leading smartphone manufacturer, today clarified that the market price of the Galaxy S5 has not been slashed by the company. Samsung Electronics' flagship smartphone, which was launched in March 2014, continues to be priced at Rs. 51,500. Galaxy Gear 2 is priced at Rs. 21,900 and both Galaxy Gear 2 Neo and Galaxy Gear Fit are priced at Rs. 15,900 each. This pricing is based on robust demand and increasing sales. The company further added that reports claiming Samsung Electronics has revised prices of Galaxy S5 are false and baseless. Galaxy S5 was made available in India through Samsung's retail stores and online sites starting April 11, 2014.

HTC releases One (M8) Dual Lens SDK for third-party developers

htc_one_m8_rear.jpg
HTC has started allowing third-party app developers to fiddle with the HTC One (M8)'s Duo Camera via new APIs and SDKs.
"HTC is excited to introduce the initial SDK preview for the Dual Lens API for all third party developers. With this SDK preview, developers will be able to create new effects and find new innovative uses for the images captures by the HTC One (M8)," states the HTC Dev blog.
The SDK preview that includes the APIs for the HTC One (M8)'s DualLens and DimensionPlus features, will allow the third-party apps to exploit the handset's refocussing and other abilities, offering some new innovative functionalities to the users.
The firm has also mentioned what the developers would get in the API files:
DualLens - support for obtaining and managing a "bokeh" strength map mask for requested strength values.
DimensionPlus - support for the DimensionPlus file format. Includes a DimensionPlusView class for rendering DimensionPlus photos and a DimensionPlusUtility class for exporting images in the DimensionPlus format.
The HTC One (M8) Dual Lens SDK Preview is available to download after the login and registering of existing and new users.
The Duo Camera is one of the main highlights of the HTC One (M8) smartphone. While the main camera is the same 4-UltraPixel resolution as before, HTC is claiming improved performance. The second rear camera captures depth information, given the phone the ability to do things like refocussing images, background detection in a much better fashion.
HTC One (M8) was launched on 25 March. Some of the key features of the handset include a Qualcomm Snapdragon 801 SoC; 2GB of RAM; Android 4.4.2 KitKat OS; Sense 6 UI; 4-UltraPixel rear camera; 5-megapixel front camera; and 2600mAh battery capacity.

LG G3 rumour roundup: Chipset, retail packaging, and release date

lg-g2-white-big.jpg
Lately we have been hearing a stream of rumours and leaks regarding the LG G2's successor, the still-officially-unnamed LG G3. Adding to the list, an alleged image showing the alleged gold-coloured retail box, speculated details about its chipset and release date, and a mock-up image of the phone of the handset have surfaced online.
The golden retail box shown by The Verge, indicates the handset to arrive in a Gold variant following the colour's popularity - evinced by the demand for respective colour variants of smartphones like Samsung Galaxy S5, Apple iPhone 5s, and the HTC One. The LG G2 was also released in Red and Gold variants. Unfortunately, no details of specifications or pricing were derived from the alleged gold retail box.
However, a report coming from KoreaHerald cites a LG spokesperson stating that the firm will start mass-producing homebrewed application processors within the second quarter of this year. The processors are said to power the upcoming LG G3 and other LG and third-party mid-to-low-cost smartphones, indicating the G3 will launch soon.
The LG G3, expected to arrive in late June or early July, is said to resemble the recently seen 'LG isai FL' smartphone's design that was leaked in an image. LG's alleged 'isai FL' smartphone, which is headed to Japan's KDDI carrier, was leaked by @evleaks couple of days ago.
If the LG G3 does indeed sport a similar design as the LG isai FL, it would sport very thin bezels around the screen, something previously rumoured.
A mock-up of the LG G3 was developed by a Bulgarian blog (via Phonearena), citing an inside source who claims to have seen the device. The mock-up shows a buttons-on-the-back design that is slightly different from the G2, as well as a matte plastic finish with an underlying pattern. The G3 is also claimed to feature a removable back cover, and a microSD card slot.
No capacitive buttons are visible on the front, indicating the use of onscreen keys. The Bulgarian blog's source also indicates the presence of an LED light in the lock key, and claims the back panel will feature a dual-LED flash and infrared transmitter.
Reports from last month suggest the LG G3 handset will also be water-resistant like several of the new flagships (Sony Xperia Z2 and Samsung Galaxy S5) seen these days. It was also mentioned that while Samsung had teamed up with a Korean firm using the Liquid Silicon Moulding method to make its Samsung Galaxy S5 water-resistant, LG might go ahead with its own native technologies in the LG G3
