BBM 2.2 for Android and iOS Brings Easier Sign-Up, Friending, and More

bbm_2_2_app_update_ios.jpg
It was late last year that Canadian smartphone manufacturer BlackBerry released its BlackBerry Messenger (BBM) on Android and iOS platforms for free. Now the latest version of BBM (version 2.2) is available for download on Google Play, with the iOS version all set to hit the App Store in the coming days.
On the official BlackBerry blog, Inside BlackBerry, Jeff Gadway, head of product and brand marketing writes about the new version which has hit the Google Play store on Wednesday, "This next release (v.2.2) is focused on streamlining key aspects of the BBM experience. Our goal was to make it simpler for new users to join the BBM community and to make it faster and easier to add new BBM contacts."
The new features on BBM v2.2 for Android include an easier way to add contacts via email, wherein a user who receives a BBM invite by email can just become a contact by clicking on the link provided, rather than sending a PIN invite back, as is the current method. Even signing up for BBM is easier. All that new users require are an email ID, name and password, and they can start using it.
On the cosmetic side there are 16 new emoticons that will be added to the new version. These include a hotdog, hacker, a pair of hot lips amongst others. The 'Updates' tab has been renamed to 'Feeds', to represent a user better. It will include latest statuses and profile photos from BBM contacts and newer posts from the BBM channels that users follow. The latest version also brings a range of bug fixes and performance improvements.
The updated BBM v2.2 app Android version can be downloaded from Google Play. In addition to that the blog also makes a mention of the fact that there is something new in store for BlackBerry users. While Gadway has not given away much details in the post, he does write that the special release of the BBM for BlackBerry smartphones will be for the BBOS and BlackBerry 10 smartphones. "This special release of BBM for BlackBerry smartphones will include many of the things we've talked about here...and a few special things added for good measure," he writes.
It is also important to note that the previous update which had come to BBM (for Android, BB10 and iOS) around two months ago offered larger and bolder images, brought sticker support, as well as the ability to share photos in multi-person chats. It also increased the file sharing limit from 6MB to 16MB.
Windows Phone is still the only major smartphone ecosystem BBM has not yet made a foray into. It was however confirmed by BlackBerry that it is looking for a Q2 2014 release of BBM for Windows Phone.

oppo_n1_mini_display_official.jpg
Oppo, as promised, has made the N1 Mini official. However, the company has only listed the N1's mini-variant in China and has not revealed the pricing and availability details of the handset.
Instead the Chinese company has announced a June 10 launch day for the Oppo N1 Mini, while it has also confirmed that the smartphone will go on sale on June 11.
On the specifications front, the Oppo N1 Mini comes with a 5-inch HD display, down from the full-HD display found on the N1. The smartphone runs Color OS 1.4 on top of Android (unspecified version).
The Oppo N1 Mini weighs 150 grams, which makes it lighter compared to the N1 - which weighs 213 grams. Other specifications listed on the official site include a 13-megapixel swivel camera with dual LED flash, which is the device's major highlight, as the camera can rotate up to 206 degrees, and can lock at any angle.
The Oppo N1 packed a 3610mAh battery, while the mini-variant comes with a 2140mAh battery. There is no word on the processor, RAM, inbuilt storage and expandable storage support of the N1 Mini.
We can expect to hear more about the Oppo N1 Mini at the June 10 launch in China. Notably, there is no mention of the CyanogenMod OS.
The Oppo N1 reached the Indian market earlier this year and was priced at Rs. 39,999 (16GB).
Another Oppo smartphone, the Find 7 announced back in March, will start shipping from Thursday. Earlier this month, the Find 7 went up for pre-order in China and was expected to start shipping from May 29.

LG Display to Unveil 6-Inch Quad-HD 491PPI Display Next Week

lg_display_official.jpg
LG may have launched its G3 flagship smartphone with a 5.5-inch AH-IPS LCD QHD (1440x2560 pixels) display with an impressive pixel density of 538ppi, but South Korean company has more up its sleeve.
LG Display has announced it will be showcasing its 6-inch QHD display at the Society for Information Display's (SID) Display Week 2014, scheduled between June 3 to June 5, at the San Diego Convention Centre in San Francisco. The company revealed that the 6-inch QHD display will have a pixel density of 491ppi, which if compared to the current LG flagship is lower; however is far above what other handset manufacturers are offering in their smartphones.
In addition, Phone Arena in a report citing the head of LG Display notes that the South Korean giant is working on screens with higher pixel densities. The report claims that LG will be showcasing the panels with 700ppi pixel density soon.
lg_display_6inch_screen.jpg
LG Display's head claimed that the company has been working on reducing pixel size and is aiming to pull off 600ppi panels and in future 700ppi panels, a miniaturisation level other display companies will apparently find hard to pull off.
The South Korean giant noted at the launch of the LG G3 on Tuesday that it has reduced the pixel size on the G3's display by 44 percent from conventional full-HD mobile displays, giving it almost twice the pixels.
Commenting on the announcement LG Display's Chief Technical Officer and Executive Vice Presidentsaid, Sang-Deog Yeo said, "LG Display has become the global display leader as shown by developing many of the world's first products that incorporate IPS, FPR 3D and OLED technologies and we will continue to do our best in being the world's leader in next-generation technology."

Google is leaving no stone unturned to promote its Android Wear software project that extends Android to wearable devices. The search giant has released video tutorials for developers on YouTube, clearly aimed at attracting more to the new Android Wear ecosystem.
The new YouTube video named - "DevBytes - Android Wear: Page Notifications" by a developer advocate, Wayne Piekarski shows ability to add extra pages to existing notifications. Further, the video also shows that the Android Wear will allow users to see more details by swiping on the smartwatch display.
In addition, another Google developer advocate, Timothy Jordan has also shared notifications from Android Wear on Google+. The notifications show a Nest panic warning message; a regular Calendar notification about an event, a pop up message from a game (Clash of Clans), and Pocket Casts playing (podcast) of StarShipSofa science fiction.

In March, Google unveiled plans to help develop the watches and other wearable computers based on its own Android operating system. It's worth pointing out that Google revealed that it has been working with various brands such as Asus, HTC, LG, Motorola and Samsung to bring watches powered by Android Wear later this year. The Mountain View giant had also announced that it has been closely working with chip makers like Broadcom, Imagination, Intel, Mediatek and Qualcomm; even fashion brands like the Fossil Group for upcoming smartwatches based on Android Wear.
Motorola's Moto 360 and LG's G Watch are the first two devices to run Google's new Android Wear. LG announced that it would introduce its G Watch in the second quarter, while Motorola confirmed that its Moto 360 Android watch would be available by summer

LG revealed pricing details for Australia, Korea, Singapore, and Finland. The smartphone has also been listed by retailers in the UK, Germany, the Netherlands, and Romania.

Different telecom operators and retailers will list it at their own prices.

LG G3 to Sport Laser Autofocus Sensor, Hit Shelves by June-End: Reports

lg_g3_press_render_leaked_evleaks.jpg
Just when we were expecting that LG would keep something hidden for the launch of its flagship smartphone, the LG G3, the smartphone has started appearing in more leaks.
First there was an alleged press render leaked by Phonearena, showcasing LG G3 in full glory with colour scheme, and now the famous tipster @evleaks has hinted at what the mysterious sensor previously spotted on the G3's back panel in leaked images is - a laser autofocus sensor.
The tweet by @evleaks reads, "Mystery G3 sensor? Laser auto focus."
According to @evleaks, what is seen on the left of the LG G3's camera in leaked images is not an IR blaster as previously speculated, but an laser autofocus sensor that will help the camera ascertain the depth at which to focus. Notably, the HTC One (M8) (Review I Pictures) features a duo rear camera setup for the same reason - with the secondary camera meant to help the primary achieve the correct depth-focus.
@evleaks also shared a set of alleged press renders of the LG G3 which have the display on, and showcasing the circular lock screen that LG had revealed in its teaser video for the LG G3.
lg_g3_ui_screenshot_evleaks.jpg
The tipster also shared an alleged UI screenshot (later removed) of the device's home screen in landscape mode. The alleged screenshot looked similar to the LG's Optimus UI, but it added a fourth touch button alongside the app switcher button.
In another leak from an Indian website, which claims to have received information from a reliable source, LG G3 is said to hit store shelves by June-end. The website also claimed that the LG G3 is not made of a polycarbonate material, but is in fact metal. The brushed metal finish for the LG G3 has been confirmed by the company in the teaser video, however, it still remains possible that finish has been achieved on a polycarbonate body.
The website also claimed that that the LG G3 will be powered by a Snapdragon 801 SoC instead of the previously rumoured Snapdragon 805 SoC. Other specifications mentioned by the website however remain the same as previously rumoured - a 5.5-inch QHD display, 3GB RAM and a 13-megapixel Sony IMX 214 Exmor RS sensor with OIS+. Another earlier rumour had indicated that the LG G3 will come in a 16GB variant that features 2GB of RAM, while its 32GB variant will sport 3GB of RAM.
The credibility of all these leaks and reports will ascertained on the day of the LG G3's official unveiling, scheduled for May 27 in London, New York, and San Francisco, followed by a May 28 event in Singapore, Istanbul and Seoul.

Panasonic P81 With Octa-Core Processor Teased for May Launch

panasonic_p81_teaser_octa_core_youtube.jpg
Panasonic has yet again teased its upcoming Panasonic P81 smartphone, a glimpse of which we saw earlier this month in the form of a teaser image. This time the firm has not only
teased the smartphone's feature in an image, but has also released a video teaser that reveals one of the key specifications.
While the previous image hinted at swappable back covers for thesmartphone, the latest teaser image clearly mentions 'octa-core' written at the bottom and suggests its launch in May. The image also focuses on the smartphone's performance, by saying 'Get ready for speed'. The teaser image also has 'Swift. Smooth. Sensational.' written at the bottom.
The teaser video once again teases the Panasonic P81's speed, and boasts of an octa-core processor. However, the firm did not specifically mention which processor it will be using. It is being speculated that the Panasonic P81 will flaunt a MediaTek octa-core SoC, and a full-HD display.
The firm, earlier this week posted another teaser image on its Facebook page focussing on the Panasonic P81's SMART app switch feature along with a statement "Flip Across Your Favourite Worlds." This indicates that the users, via the Smart app switch feature, can simply jump from one app to another. The feature has not yet been detailed by the company.
Panasonic P81 will also include a slew of preloaded applications such as Evernote, Readwhere, Hungama etc.
The firm last launched the Panasonic P31 smartphone in March this year for Rs. 11,990. Some of thekey specifications of the smartphone are Android 4.2.2 Jelly Bean; 5-inch FWVGA (480x854 pixel) display; 1.3GHz quad-core CPU; 8-megapixel rear camera; VGA front-facing camera; 4GB of inbuilt storage (expandable up to 32GB via microSD card), and a 2000mAh battery.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime 'SM-G906L' Listed on Bluetooth SIG Database

samsung_galaxy_s5_prime_variant_spotted_bluetooth_sig_screenshot.jpg
While Samsung's official statement discards rumours for a premium version of its recently launched Samsung Galaxy S5, the rising number of leaks and rumours makes the company's stance a little hard to believe. The much-rumoured premium variant of the Samsung Galaxy S5, tipped to be called the Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime, has now reportedly been added in Bluetooth SIG's database.
The alleged Samsung Galaxy S5 Prime appeared on Bluetooth SIG's website with the codename SM-G906L, a codename that has previously been unofficially associated with the Galaxy S5 Prime. The Bluetooth SIG page for the device does not contain any specifications apart from Bluetooth 4.0, which we could have guessed easily. The SM-G906L is also said to be under a testing phase as the hardware version is mentioned as REV0.1.
Rumours from past reports indicate the alleged Galaxy S5 Prime will be launched in mid-June. It has been further noted that the smartphone can be priced in Korea for KRW 900,000 (roughly $880 or Rs. 52,000). Earlier there were rumours from Korea suggesting the alleged Galaxy S5 Prime would be limited edition smartphone with a QHD Super AMOLED display, specifically designed to counter the LG G3.
The Samsung Galaxy S5 (Review | Pictures) Prime besides SM-G906L, is also said to arrive in SM-G906K and SM-G906S variants. It was rumoured that Samsung would be ditching Qualcomm's Snapdragon chipsets on the SM-G906K variant, and would instead use an Intel processor for one of the two variants (SM-G906L and SM-G906K), while the other would sport the Samsung Exynos 5430 chipset. However, the third variant - SM-G906S - has already made an appearance in a listing on a Hong Kong website with pricing (HKD 5,070) and specifications that included 3GB of RAM and a Snapdragon 805 processor - better specifications than the official Galaxy S5.
Going into further details, it is being said that for the alleged Galaxy S5 Prime variant sporting the Exynos 5430 chipset, Samsung might aim for a 2.1GHz and 1.5GHz clocking speed on the ARM Cortex A15 and A7 cores respectively, and boast of a small boost in CPU power compared to previous iterations

The company also touted some software features of the Moto E, such as Motorola Assist, Alert, and Migrate.
Motorola sees Android 4.4 KitKat as a key differentiator for its range, claiming that 88 percent of Moto G and 91 percent of Moto X users run Android 4.4 KitKat, compared to 8.5 percent of all Android users.
At the launch event in Delhi, Motorola announced that it was now operating in 44 countries. The company claimed that the Moto G had been very successful, terming it the best selling smartphone that Motorola has produced. The Moto G was the "top selling phone in Brazil," Motorola added.

Samsung Galaxy S5 Firmware Update Speeds-Up Camera App and More

samsung_galaxy_s5_copper_gold.jpg
Samsung has rolled-out a firmware update for its flagship smartphone, the Samsung Galaxy S5, enabling users to experience a faster access to gallery app and slightly more precise fingerprint sensor.
Besides the faster opening of the gallery app, the update also boosts the camera app opening speed of the Galaxy S5, reports Sammobile. This, when paired with the already existing 0.3 second autofocus feature of the handset, would offer even better ISOCELL camera experience to users.
The Galaxy S5 update additionally enhances the fingerprint scanner accuracy and the fingerprint reading time. The general performance of the Galaxy S5 (Review | Pictures) has also been improved along with better RAM management.
The Galaxy S5 firmware update, named G900FXXU1ANE2, is currently available for UK customers (International model - SMG900F) and might soon reach other regions, via OTA or Samsung Kies software. However, for those who can't wait to get their hands on the latest update, they can manually install it from Sammobile, though we do not recommend this.
This is not the first update for the Samsung Galaxy S5 handset since its launch at the MWC 2014. Last week, Samsung announced its latest Knox 2.0 security suite for the Galaxy S5, a suite that will be rolled out to other Samsung Galaxy devices through OS upgrades in the coming months.
The Knox Workspace includes a series of core security enhancements for devices from erratic kernels to third-party apps. Some of the features in Knox Workspace: TrustZone-protected certificate management, Knox key store, real-time protection for system integrity, two-factor biometric authentication and the generic framework of Knox.
The Korean tech giant also gave a stability update , version XXU1ANCE, to its Galaxy S5 just before the release.

Gmail Becomes the First Android App to Hit 1 Billion Downloads

gmail_hits_1_billion_downloads_google_play_store_appbrain_screenshot.jpg
The Gmail for Android app has reached a massive 1 billion download milestone on Google Play last week, the first app to have done so.
To be specific however, the 1 billion downloads figure displayed on Google Play for the Android app of Gmail, one of the most widely-used email services, is actually a tally of total unique accounts or installs, and not the total number of devices or users that downloaded the app.
It has been additionally noted that the 1 billion unique accounts include inactive or duplicate accounts. In 2012, it was noted that Gmail had 425 million active monthly users, which by now must have increased dramatically with the ever-growing popularity of Android, reports Android Police. As per AppBrain website, Gmail reached the  half-way mark (500,000,000+ downloads) back in June 2013.
Gmail will celebrate its 2-year anniversary of becoming the most widely-used email service next month, and might take the opportunity to roll-out the much-anticipated radical design as seen in previous rumours and leaks.
On Monday, we saw a glimpse of what might soon arrive in the new UI design of Gmail in the form ofsome leaked screenshots. One look at the screenshots and it becomes evident that the search-engine giant is trying to unify the design philosophy of Gmail on mobile and web. If the leaked screenshots indicates the design direction Google is trying to take, it seems to be aiming to make the design less cluttered.
In the redesign, Google seems to be concentrating on scaling to various screen sizes and resolutions without losing functionality. We noticed that the sidebar is now replaced by a slide-in pane. The compose button is now moved to the bottom right corner, and it now has a new feature down there: reminders. A new pin system replaces starred emails and can be used to pin important emails to the top. In addition, Travel, Purchases, and Finance tabs are now available along with the already existing Social, Promotional, Updates, and Forums tabs. The redesign now looks very similar to Google Now on Android

Earlier, Oppo India CEO, Mr. Tom Lu, while speaking about its eaxpansion plan in India had said, " The Oppo N1 marked our entry into the Indian market and our forthcoming products including the soon-to-be-launched Oppo Find 7 will enable us to replicate our global success story here."
