New technology can charge your smartphone in 30 seconds

storedot_prototype_charger_youtube.jpg
Does your smartphone run out of battery within few hours? Then you might be happy to know that a prototype charger has been showcased that promises to charge a device from zero to 100 percent in just 30 seconds.
An Israeli firm dubbed StoreDot introduced this prototype charger at Microsoft's Think Next Conference in Tel Aviv.
As of now, StoreDot has only developed the prototype charger for the Samsung Galaxy S4; however the company has plans to make chargers for more smartphones, reports Wall Street Journal.
The report further suggests that StoreDot's prototype charger is expected to cost twice that of a regular charger, up to $30 and is likely to go under commercial production for late 2016.
The Israeli company has demoed the prototype charger of the Galaxy S4 in a video, which shows a laptop charger-sized device placed at the rear panel of the smartphone. Notably, the phone's battery status is at 27 percent before plugging the StoreDot's prototype charger.
Watch the video here:

The WSJ report further notes that the company intends to reduce the size of the prototype charger before going for commercial production.
It's worth pointing out that StoreDot is famous for using bio-inspired nanotechnology and the yet-to-be-named prototype charger utilises quantum dot technology.
TechCrunch quotes StoreDot's CEO and founder Dr. Doron Myersdorf who said, "We are about one year from a functional prototype that will be inside the device. Right now we show a battery that extends beyond the form factor of the smartphone. So in one year we'll have reached the size, and in two years we'll reach the required energy density for the entire day. So we are talking about three years for a commercial ready device. So I assume it will be three years before you can actually purchase it on the market."

Microsoft's purchase of Nokia's phone business gets Chinese approval

nokia_finland_ap.jpg
Nokia has received approval from Chinese authorities to sell its mobile phone business to Microsoft Corp, it said on Tuesday, and added there had been no request for it to change its patent practices.
Nokia agreed in September to sell the business to Microsoft in a 5.4 billion euro deal. However, the Finnish company kept its patent portfolio, which is seen by analysts as a promising source of future growth.
Nokia said that it still expected the Microsoft deal to close in April.
"Nokia and Microsoft have now received regulatory approvals from the People's Republic of China, the European Commission, the U.S. Department of Justice and numerous other jurisdictions," Nokia said in a statement.
Nokia shares rose 2.9 percent to 5.48 euros after the approval was announced.
As a phone maker, Nokia has paid rivals for the use of their technology licences as well as charging for its own. A newly restructured Nokia would be freer to push up those fees, analysts say.
Google and Samsung had asked Chinese regulators to ensure that the deal with Microsoft would not lead to higher licensing fees, according to media reports.
But Nokia said that it had not been accused of unfair practices regarding its patents.
"No authority has challenged Nokia's compliance with its undertakings related to standard-essential patents or requested that Nokia make changes to its licensing programme or royalty terms," it said in the statement

Nokia celebrates 20th birthday of its iconic ringtone

nokia_celebrates_20_birthday_nokia_tune.jpg
Nokia, the Finnish smartphone maker, is celebrating the 20th birthday of its iconic ringtone. The famous patent tone, which debuted in the year 1994 on the Nokia 2110 handset, is till date found as a ringtone on the company's Lumia and Asha range of handsets.
"Naturally, there have been many different versions of the Nokia ringtone as the technology has advanced over the years, but the melody always remains the same," stated Nokia in its official conversations blog.
The firm, through a video, revealed the a cappella version of the song. The video shows four people giving different beats (vocals) and mirroring the iconic Nokia music in their own way.
A number of Nokia users have additionally shared their thoughts on the couple of decade old iconic tune. "It's still being a classic. From my 3500 Classic, to my Lumia 920 :D -HB Nokia Tune," states a user named Leonel Castellano.
"Who can forget the famous ringtone back in early 2000 (that's what really stuck in my mind), the "Connecting People" animated gif whenever you boot your device followed by the start-up tone. Ah, those were the days. That particular tone was very unique to Nokia and I recall, even other device manufacturers made that tone available as option tone to their device. Happy Birthday Nokia! (I'm supposed to sing you a Happy Birthday song but the song itself was already licensed, so... Hahaha! Cheers!)," stated Hethler De Chavez, another Nokia fan.
Nokia, days before celebrating the 20th birthday for its Nokia tune, unveiled Nokia Lumia 930, Lumia 630 and Lumia 635 along with Windows Phone 8.1 OS

Samsung Galaxy S5's anti-theft features praised

samsung_galaxy_s5_official.jpg
A move by Samsung to include free anti-theft features on its Galaxy S5 smartphones sold by Verizon Wireless and U.S. Cellular won praise on Friday by two U.S. members of an international coalition aimed at combating robberies involving smartphones.

The new features allow Samsung Galaxy S5 users to track devices and require the owner's account information to reset the phone. The features, Find My Mobile, and Reactivation Lock, will come installed in the phones but must be activated by users.

"The decision ... to provide Samsung's Find My Mobile and Reactivation Lock features on Galaxy S5 smartphones and to allow those features to be activated for free is a step forward in our effort to ensure the industry makes effective theft deterrents available on every smartphone sold in America," New York's attorney general, Eric Schneiderman, and San Francisco's district attorney, George Gascon, said in a statement.

(Also seeSamsung Galaxy S5: 10 big new features)

Schneiderman and Gascon, along with London Mayor Boris Johnson, are co-chairs of the coalition Secure Our Smartphone Initiative.

They said, however, that they remain "concerned that consumers will need to opt in to the system, thereby limiting the ubiquity and effectiveness of the solution."

Both Schneiderman and Gascon have criticized the cellphone industry for what they say is a perceived unwillingness to solve an escalating theft problem.

Schneiderman has publicly supported bills currently in the U.S. House of Representatives and Senate that would require a kill switch to be installed in every smartphone manufactured in the United States. The switch would prevent the phone from being re-activated in the black market.

In 2012, 1.6 million Americans were victimized for their smartphones, according to Schneiderman's office.

Micromax to offer Windows Phone smartphones later this year

microsoft_build_conference_micromax_prestigio_ap.jpg
Domestic handset maker Micromax has partnered with Microsoft to offer Windows Phone 8.1-powered smartphones in the country. The deal - that was announced on Wednesday at Microsoft's Build 2014 conference in San Francisco - is expected to intensify competition in the smartphone space in India.
Microsoft Executive VP (Operating Systems) Terry Myerson on Wednesday said: "We are thrilled to welcome 11 new Windows Phone partners since Mobile World Congress in February, with the addition of Micromax and Prestigio just announced today".
Delhi-based Micromax's revenues were Rs. 3,168 crores for the financial year 2012-13 and it expects to clock revenues of $1 billion for the last fiscal-ended March 2014. The mobile manufacturer is expected to release its first Windows Phone smartphone later this year.
Micromax, which is the second largest smartphone player in India, held about 16 percent market share in Q4 2013, according to IDC data. Some its top-selling models were the entry level smartphones like A35 Bolt and A67.
Besides, the software giant has also announced that it will offer its Windows operating system free to smartphone and tablet makers (for devices with screen-sizes less than 9-inches), a move that will help the firm compete with Google's Android and Apple's iOS in the fiercely competitive smart devices market.
This offering also enables hardware partners to provide their customers a one-year subscription to Office 365. The move, though surprising, will led to a fiercer competition in the smartphone and tablets space, especially in the backdrop of its plans to acquire the handset business of Finnish phone maker Nokia for $7.2 billion.
Microsoft's third CEO, Satya Nadella, since his appointment in February has been emphasising the company's focus on mobile and cloud

FireChat for Android launched, lets users chat without a data connection

firechat_android_screenshot.jpg
A new mobile messaging application called FireChat is empowering nearby smartphone users to stay in touch even when there's no cellular service or Internet connection.
In just two weeks since its release on the iPhone, FireChat already has provided a flicker of hope for people pining for more effective, secure and affordable ways to communicate. That's because the free messaging app harnesses a technology called wireless mesh networking, which might someday allow a myriad of devices to connect like links in a chain.
The technique might someday be used to tie together thousands of devices with built-in radios and make it possible to be online without having to pay for the access. It could also enable online communications in remote areas or disaster zones without Wi-Fi or cellular signals. Furthermore, the conversations in these so-called "off-the-grid" networks can't be easily hacked into by spies and mischief makers or shut down by governments trying to stifle free speech.
"We trying to create networks built by the people for the people," said Micha Benoliel, CEO of Open Garden, maker of the FireChat app.
Open Garden, a San Francisco startup with just 10 employees, is taking another step toward its ambitious goal with Thursday's release of a FireChat app for Android phones.
FireChat could be an even hotter commodity on Android given the demographic differences between that platform's user base and the typical iPhone owner. The app already has been installed on more than 1 million iOS devices.
Many smartphones running on Google Inc.'s free Android software are cheaper than Apple Inc.'s iPhone. That has made Android phones the top-selling mobile devices in less affluent countries, including in regions where Internet access is inadequate or expensive.
Google is among the big Internet companies intrigued with mesh networking's potential to bring more of the world online.
Sundar Pichai, Google's executive in charge of Android, has touted mesh networks as a way to connect wearable computers, such as the company's Glass eyewear. Mesh networks also could be used to bring a wide variety of everyday appliances online, helping to build an Internet of things instead of just websites.
FireChat's reach so far is limited. When connecting off the grid, iPhone app users have only been able to send text and photos to other FireChat users within a range of 30 to 100 feet.
Later this year, Open Garden plans to upgrade FireChat's iPhone app so off-the-grid users will be able to hopscotch through a daisy chain of devices to extend the reach of a local network. If this works, a FireChat user sitting in the right-field bleachers of a baseball game would be able to text with a friend on the other side of the stadium if enough other iPhone users in the ballpark also are on FireChat.
This extended range will be available immediately on FireChat's Android app because Open Garden released a mesh networking app for that operating system nearly two years ago.
FireChat's iPhone app piggybacks on an often overlooked feature called the Multipeer Connectivity Framework that Apple Inc. included in its latest mobile operating system, iOS 7, released last September. Apple says more than 80 percent of people using its mobile devices rely on iOS 7.
For now, Android phones and iPhones with the FireChat app won't be able to engage in off-the-grid conversation. Open Garden, though, believes it will eventually be able to make mesh networking work on phones running on different operating systems.
As the mesh networking software improved, Benoliel realized Open Garden needed to come up with application to demonstrate what the technology could do. In that practical sense, FireChat is similar to the word processing and spreadsheet programs that Microsoft released decades ago to help broaden the appeal of its Windows operating system for personal computers, said Christophe Daligault, Open Garden's marketing chief.
FireChat's development was driven by the popularity of other mobile messaging apps such as Snapchat and WhatsApp that enabled smartphone users to text and send pictures to their friends and family without having to pay smartphone carriers.
Like texts and photos sent on Snapchat, nothing transmitted through FireChat is saved. All content evaporates once the app is closed. FireChat also allows all its users to remain anonymous, another feature that is becoming popular on a variety of mobile messaging apps, such as Wickr and Rumr.
There still aren't enough people using FireChat to ensure users will find someone nearby to message. To pique people's interest in the app, FireChat offers an "everyone" option that allows users to enter a digital chat room with up to 80 other random users located in the same country. This option requires a Wi-Fi or cellular connection.
Dailigault concedes FireChat's chat room isn't as high-minded as mesh networking.
"We are finding a lot of people are using it when they are just looking for something to do for a few minutes," Dailigault said. "Some of the discussions there are turning out to be more interesting than anything they can find on Facebook.
